Vashon Sheepdog Classic 2018

I was pleased to create the poster and merchandise design this year for the Vashon Sheepdog Classic! It’s one of my favorite events on our little island, and they give so much back to the community. I love the way it came out, and stay tuned for updates on how it looks on shirts and more! If you’ve never been to the Vashon Sheepdog Classic, I can’t recommend it enough. And shameless non-profit plug here, I’m on the board of Vashon Partners in Education and we sell “PIE Smart Dog Sponsorships” every year to fundraise — participants get to sponsor a dog and handler, do a meet and greet, get in to the event for free and more. Check out all of the benefits here: VashonPIE.org. It’s a crazy good time!

Free Button Project: Hate Has No Place Here

I haven’t been outward about mixing politics and business, and I won’t go there today. That said, I staunchly believe in inclusivity and tolerance, and will defend that principle happily in my everyday dealings with everything and everyone. Which leads me to the buttons.

Two days after the presidential election the buttons were born — with the intent to wear, to share and to sprinkle around my community. It’s interesting what a pocketful of buttons (tiny jingles, smooth to the touch) will do for your outlook on the day and how fun it is to leave them around for anyone to find.

They are free and meant to be freely given. If you would like some to wear and share, let me know and I’ll mail you some. And if you are interested in being your own community’s button fairy, I’ve set up a website with information about ordering your own large batches from the button manufacturer (this keeps the cost down, and the only ones making a profit is the wholesale manufacturer.) There are also links there for buttons in Spanish and free downloadable signs, as well as a Zazzle link that does have bumper stickers, t-shirts etc. for sale, with all proceeds going into my little project, any leftover proceeds once this has run it’s course will be donated to MomsRising.

In the words of Leonard Bernstein, ” We must believe in the attainability of good. We must believe, without fear, in people.”

More branding in action: Vashon Sheepdog Classic 2016

I love seeing my branding work reinterpreted in other mediums—I fell in love with these bowls at the 2016 Vashon Sheepdog Classic, created by Clay & Coffee. Unfortunately these were prizes for the handlers, or I would have been taking one home with me. Check out Elena Wendelyn’s other work at Clay & Coffee!

Loving Valentine’s Day

It’s no secret that I adore my clients — and when the stars align and reward me with a few extra minutes in January, I love to show them by sending a Valentine’s treat. Here’s a photo of this year’s sweets packaging, complete with a heart button. My apologies to my international clients, getting these sent overseas was prohibitive — I promise to hand deliver some Seattle and Vashon-made goodness next time I’m in your neighborhood! And if you are U.S. client and you didn’t receive one, let me know — sometimes they get lost along the way.

And speaking of taking time to do things by hand, I ordered eco-friendly mailing envelopes for the Valentine’s mailing from EcoEnclose in Longmont, Colorado. Online, they looked like a great company with actual people, making products you could feel good about using. Not only did they arrive quickly, but with this handwritten note on my invoice —that’s personalized service!

Branding in action: Vashon Sheepdog Classic

I was thrilled to work with the Vashon Sheepdog Classic again as my pro-bono client for 2015. In addition to designing their posters and other publicity materials, this was the year for a branding overhaul and a brand new logo, and I’m really happy with how it turned out. Besides being telling a great story and being easy to work with, I just love how it looks in other applications—including these fun hats and the welcome sign, all created by the event folks. If you’ve never been to a professional sheepdog trial, I invite you to join me in 2016 at the Vashon Sheepdog Classic! It’s a one-of-a-kind event. You can find more information here.

Smithsonian Readers

I love it when a big heavy box arrives from a client—that means book samples are here! These just arrived yesterday … a series of four leveled-readers for Silver Dolphin Books and the Smithsonian—I designed the covers, overall look and feel of the interiors, tear out fact cards for all levels, and the entire level 4 “Endless Explorations.” The covers feature foil and embossing, a little hard to capture on the fly, but I think they turned out nicely.Smithsonian readers_blog

“Big Machines” Read it yourself with Ladybird

My first title with Ladybird will be out in July, and I just received a sneak peek of the finalized book. Illustrating construction vehicles was challenging and fun, and the Ladybird staff were fantastic to work with. A bonus—I’ll never look at a construction vehicle again without running through all of the parts and pieces in my head!

Client highlight—Cami Lundeen, watch out world!

I wrote a while back about one of my amazing clients, singer-songwriter Cami Lundeen, and her journey of putting out an album and overcoming obstacles. Well, she and her family are at it again—this time taking a giant leap by selling all of their possessions, and taking the family on a cross-country music tour. Our lovely local paper did a nice story on them. You can find out more about Cami and booking opportunities on her website. They are kicking off the tour with a concert this Friday. They will be sorely missed and I can’t wait to hear about their adventures.

Pro bono projects make the world go round

Every year I take on at least one pro bono design project. Last year, I was thrilled to work with the fabulous women at SoundGirls.org—a group of professional audio engineers who are encouraging and inspiring young women to consider the exciting field of audio engineering—a occupation where only 5% are women. Their site is chocked full of great information, news and profiles of women working in the field. I created their logo and provided some other fun graphics for their site.

This year, I am pleased to announce that I’ve chosen the Vashon Sheepdog Classic as my pro bono client. The Vashon Sheepdog Classic is a 4 day National level sheep herding event at Misty Isle Farms on Vashon Island and will be held this year August 22-25 . If you’ve never watched a professional sheepdog trial (think “Babe” but much larger and wilder) I really couldn’t recommend a better way to spend a summer day. Besides being such a terrific event to attend, the Vashon Sheepdog Classic gifts the proceeds from the event to island nonprofit organizations that focus on the enrichment of education and health for Vashon youth. The talented Kristine Dahms of Twist Design has been VSC’s pro bono designer, and I’m happy to continue the work she’s done so wonderfully for them. For more information on the Vashon Sheepdog Classic, visit their site or Facebook page.
